Ice Hotels

Hotels carved from frozen river water and rebuilt, room by room, as the seasons turn.

An ice hotel is built from frozen water and lit by daylight that passes through its walls. Sleeping in one is cold, quiet and brief.

This category holds a single entry, the hotel that started the idea and still rebuilds part of itself every winter.

Entry 1

Icehotel

Jukkasjärvi, Sweden

Every winter the hotel is cut from the Torne River. Blocks of ice are lifted out, stored, and used to build a new set of rooms when the cold returns.

Artists from many countries design the art suites, so the interiors change from year to year. A permanent section, kept frozen all year by its own cooling system, lets guests sleep on ice even in summer. Warm rooms and cabins sit nearby for those who want one cold night and the rest indoors. The village lies well north of the Arctic Circle, a short drive from Kiruna.
